One of the biggest weight loss trends in the past few years is the low carbohydrate diet. These diets call for focusing on cutting out most carbohydrates from your daily meals and eating only protein and fats. While this diet is a good tool for a quick temporary weight loss, the long term effects of cutting out carbohydrates can cause many problems to a person. Also, due to this diet being only popular for the past decade or so, many of the long term effects are not yet known. Listed below are several reasons why you should not try a low carbohydrate diet, instead of choosing a healthy well balanced approach to dieting.
Muscle Decrease: Being on a low carbohydrate diet will not only deplete your amount of muscle mass, thus resulting in weight loss, but it will also give you very little energy to exercise. The body is fueled by carbohydrates as it burns calories during physical activity. Without these carbohydrates the body will wear down easily during physical activity. Carbohydrates fuel the body with energy to perform these activities and without carbohydrates in the system the strength and energy of the person will quickly fade.
Quick weight loss is usually water: The reason that these diets have become so popular is because the participant can lose up to 10-20 lbs in a short period of time. While these results may seem great, this weight is often water weight that comes off due to your body using it to sustain itself. After stopping this low carbohydrate diet, many participants soon gain much of the weight back and are back to square one with their weight loss goals.
Horrible feeling: Among the many side effects that one may get from low carbohydrate dieting is dizziness, heart palpations, anxiety, and a general foul mood. Restricting yourself from what your body needs puts your brain in a panic mode and these results may occur. There is nothing worse than being around someone who is constantly on a fad diet, because they are generally very irritable and have a much shorter temper than they normally do.
Overall the use of any type of fad diet whether it be low carbohydrate, all juice or excessive calorie restriction often comes with drawbacks. The key to losing weight and feeling healthy are choosing correct portion sizes, limiting unhealthy food and starting an exercise routine. The fad diets or the diets that promise quick weight loss usually come and go, as eating healthy well balanced meals have stood the test of time.
